Where they differ

Rate limits set the price

Alpha Vantage prices its plans by how many requests you can make: 25 a day free, then 75 to 1,200 a minute on paid plans. Every Massive paid plan has unlimited calls, so you can page through ten years of minute bars without code to slow your requests down.

Streaming and tick data

Alpha Vantage is REST only, with bars and latest quotes. Massive streams trades, quotes, and aggregates over WebSockets, and keeps every US stock trade and NBBO quote back to 2003.

Outside the US

For stocks listed outside the US, such as on the LSE or TSX, Alpha Vantage may be the better choice. It also has commodities. Massive covers US stocks, options, indices, and futures, plus global forex and crypto.

  • Alpha Vantage has no date range parameters. outputsize=full returns 20+ years and needs a premium key, and you filter dates in your code. Massive takes a from and to date in the path.
  • Alpha Vantage returns values as strings in an object keyed by date. Massive returns an array of bars with numbers.
  • Replace polling loops with a WebSocket subscription to wss://socket.massive.com/stocks.

Switch with an agent

Paste this into Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or any coding agent. It finds your Alpha Vantage calls and ports them to Massive.

Find every place my project calls Alpha Vantage. Switch those calls to the Massive REST API. Read https://massive.com/docs/llms.txt for endpoints and auth, and read the API key from the MASSIVE_API_KEY environment variable. Keep my function signatures and data shapes the same, and list anything Massive does not cover.

The ported code calls the REST API directly. The Massive MCP server is optional, for checking real responses while the agent works. Massive also publishes skills and plugins for coding agents.
