# Massive vs Alpha Vantage

Updated October 2026. Written by Massive. Canonical page: https://massive.com/compare/massive-vs-alpha-vantage

Massive is built for production apps: real-time streaming, tick-level trades and quotes, flat files, and no call limits on paid plans. If you only make a few calls a day for non-US stocks or commodities, Alpha Vantage covers that.

- Massive leads on: Free plan, Price, Streaming, Tick data, Bulk downloads, Commercial use
- Alpha Vantage leads on: Options history, Non-US stocks, Technical indicators
- Even on: Real-time options, Fundamentals, AI agents

## What each one is

**Massive.** Massive is a market data API for US stocks, options, indices, and futures, plus forex and crypto. It delivers data over REST, WebSockets, S3 flat files, and an MCP server.

**Alpha Vantage.** Alpha Vantage is a REST API for stock, forex, crypto, fundamentals, and economic data, with paid plans priced by requests per minute.

## Choose Massive if

- You stream prices instead of polling.
- You need every trade and NBBO quote, not just bars.
- You make more than 25 requests a day.
- You want commercial use without a sales call.

## Choose Alpha Vantage if

- You need stocks from exchanges outside the US, such as LSE, TSX, or XETRA.
- You want commodity prices in the same API.
- You want 50+ technical indicators calculated on the server.
- You need US options history back to 2008.

## Where they differ

### Rate limits set the price

Alpha Vantage prices its plans by how many requests you can make: 25 a day free, then 75 to 1,200 a minute on paid plans. Every Massive paid plan has unlimited calls, so you can page through ten years of minute bars without code to slow your requests down.

### Streaming and tick data

Alpha Vantage is REST only, with bars and latest quotes. Massive streams trades, quotes, and aggregates over WebSockets, and keeps every US stock trade and NBBO quote back to 2003.

### Outside the US

For stocks listed outside the US, such as on the LSE or TSX, Alpha Vantage may be the better choice. It also has commodities. Massive covers US stocks, options, indices, and futures, plus global forex and crypto.

## Pricing

Prices in USD per month, from public pricing pages on October 23, 2026.

| What you need | Massive | Alpha Vantage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Daily bars for 500 tickers, once a day | Stocks Starter $29/mo (unlimited calls) | $49.99/mo (75 requests/min). The free plan allows 25 a day [1] |
| Real-time US stock prices | $199/mo (Stocks Advanced), streaming included | Premium from $49.99/mo, personal use only, REST polling [1][2] |
| Commercial use in your product | Stocks Business $2,499/mo, self-serve | Contact sales [3] |

## Moving from Alpha Vantage

### Example: daily AAPL bars

Alpha Vantage:

```bash
curl "https://www.alphavantage.co/query?function=TIME_SERIES_DAILY&symbol=AAPL&outputsize=full&apikey=YOUR_API_KEY"
```

Massive:

```bash
curl "https://api.massive.com/v2/aggs/ticker/AAPL/range/1/day/2024-01-02/2024-01-31" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
```

| Field | Alpha Vantage | Massive |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Timestamp | Date string key, such as "2024-01-02" | t (Unix milliseconds, bar start) |
| Open | "1. open" (string) | o |
| High | "2. high" (string) | h |
| Low | "3. low" (string) | l |
| Close | "4. close" (string) | c |
| Volume | "5. volume" (string) | v |
| VWAP | None | vw |
| Trade count | None | n |

- Alpha Vantage has no date range parameters. outputsize=full returns 20+ years and needs a premium key, and you filter dates in your code. Massive takes a from and to date in the path.
- Alpha Vantage returns values as strings in an object keyed by date. Massive returns an array of bars with numbers.
- Replace polling loops with a WebSocket subscription to wss://socket.massive.com/stocks.

### Switch with an agent

Paste this into any coding agent:

> Find every place my project calls Alpha Vantage. Switch those calls to the Massive REST API. Read https://massive.com/docs/llms.txt for endpoints and auth, and read the API key from the MASSIVE_API_KEY environment variable. Keep my function signatures and data shapes the same, and list anything Massive does not cover.

The ported code calls the REST API directly. The Massive MCP server is optional, for checking real responses while the agent works: https://massive.com/docs/ai-tools/quickstart. Skills and plugins for coding agents: https://github.com/massive-com/ai
