What is Massive

Massive is a market data API for US stocks, options, indices, and futures, plus forex and crypto. It delivers data over REST, WebSockets, S3 flat files, and an MCP server.

What is yfinance

yfinance is a free, open-source Python library that pulls market data from Yahoo Finance. Its README says it is not affiliated with, endorsed, or vetted by Yahoo, and is meant for research and education.

Choose Massive if

  • You run anything in production, or sell a product built on the data.
  • You need a license to use the data commercially.
  • You need data that does not break when a website changes.
  • You need more than 60 days of intraday history, or every trade and quote.

Choose yfinance if

  • You are learning, or exploring data for yourself.
  • You want global tickers and fundamentals for free.

Yahoo can change or shut off its APIs at any time, and bars commercial use without permission.

Where they differ

What unofficial means

yfinance calls Yahoo Finance endpoints that Yahoo does not document or support. Its README says it is not affiliated with, endorsed, or vetted by Yahoo, and is meant for research and education. Under its API terms, Yahoo can change, suspend, or discontinue its APIs at any time. When Yahoo changes those endpoints, the library breaks until volunteers patch it: decryption failures in January 2023, 401 errors in July 2023, bad crumb errors in May 2025.

Rate limits you cannot see

Yahoo sets rate limits at its discretion and does not publish them. In November 2024, a user pulling 7,000 tickers a day was cut off at about 950. The yfinance repo has 16 issues titled Too Many Requests. Massive publishes its limits, and paid plans have no call limit.

Commercial use

Yahoo's API terms bar using the APIs to earn income without Yahoo's prior written permission. The Apache license on yfinance covers the code, not the data. Massive Business plans license the data for commercial use, with prices on the pricing page.

Where yfinance is enough

For a class, personal research, or a weekend backtest on daily bars, yfinance is free and quick. Global tickers and fundamentals come back as pandas DataFrames, with no signup.

Pricing

Prices in USD per month, from each vendor's public pricing pages on October 24, 2026. Check yfinance's site before you buy.

  • yfinance end dates are exclusive, so January ends at 2024-02-01. Massive end dates are inclusive.
  • yfinance adjusts Close for splits and dividends by default. Massive adjusts for splits unless you set adjusted=false.
  • Massive returns a list of bars. pandas.DataFrame(bars) turns it into the DataFrame your yfinance code expects.

Switch with an agent

Paste this into Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or any coding agent. It finds your yfinance calls and ports them to Massive.

Find every place my project calls yfinance. Switch those calls to the Massive REST API. Read https://massive.com/docs/llms.txt for endpoints and auth, and read the API key from the MASSIVE_API_KEY environment variable. Keep my function signatures and data shapes the same, and list anything Massive does not cover.

The ported code calls the REST API directly. The Massive MCP server is optional, for checking real responses while the agent works. Massive also publishes skills and plugins for coding agents.

Questions

What is a good yfinance alternative?
For US market data in production, Massive: a supported API with exchange data, a free plan, and paid plans from $29/mo per market. yfinance is still fine for learning and personal projects.
Why does yfinance return 429 Too Many Requests?
Yahoo rate-limits its endpoints at its own discretion and does not publish the limits. The yfinance repo has 16 issues titled Too Many Requests. Massive paid plans have no call limit.
Can I use yfinance commercially?
The yfinance code is Apache-licensed, but the data comes from Yahoo. Its README says the Yahoo Finance API is for personal use only, and Yahoo's API terms bar using its APIs to earn income without Yahoo's prior written permission.
How much intraday history does yfinance have?
1-minute bars for the last 30 days, 2 to 90-minute bars for 60 days, and hourly bars for 730 days. Massive has 20+ years of intraday data.
Where did Adj Close go in yfinance?
Since version 0.2.51, download() adjusts prices by default, so Close is already adjusted and Adj Close is gone. Pass auto_adjust=False to get it back.
