The answer differs by asset class, so check the one you need rather than reading a single yes or no. Equities and options are US only: every stock and OTC ticker is a US-listed instrument. Forex and crypto are global, with more than 1,200 currency pairs and 600 crypto pairs. Indices sit in between: the providers are US companies, but a quarter of the indices they publish track non-US markets, so I:MXEA (MSCI EAFE) and I:BEP50P (Cboe Europe 50) return live values. So there is a good deal of international data on Massive; what there is not is an international stock exchange.
Applies to
- Plans: every plan. This is a coverage question, not an entitlement one.
- Endpoints: /v3/reference/tickers reports a locale on every ticker, which is the authoritative answer for any symbol.
- Asset classes: stocks, options and indices are US; forex and crypto are global.
What is covered where
What is covered where is recorded on the data itself: every ticker Massive publishes carries a locale, and that field is the answer for any symbol you are unsure about:
| Asset class | Coverage | locale |
|---|---|---|
| Stocks and OTC | US exchanges and the US OTC markets | us |
| Options | US-listed options | us |
| Indices | US providers, but many non-US benchmarks: about 3,300 of 13,335 index names track a market outside the US | us, which describes the provider rather than the market |
| Futures | US futures exchanges | us |
| Forex | Global, over 1,200 pairs | global |
| Crypto | Global, over 600 pairs | global |
How to reach a foreign company today
Many large non-US companies trade in the US as American Depositary Receipts, and an ADR is a stock like any other on Massive, with the full trade, quote, aggregate and reference coverage:
curl -X GET "https://api.massive.com/v3/reference/tickers?market=stocks&search=Toyota&limit=5&apiKey=YOUR_API_KEY"
Response
{
"results": [
{ "ticker": "TM", "type": "ADRC", "primary_exchange": "XNYS", "locale": "us",
"name": "Toyota Motor Corporation American Depositary Shares (Each representing ten Ordinary Shares)" },
{ "ticker": "TMH", "type": "ETS", "primary_exchange": "ARCX", "locale": "us",
"name": "Toyota Motor Corporation ADRhedged" }
],
"status": "OK"
}
Read the type field: ADRC is the depositary receipt itself, while ETS here is a fund that holds the ADR with the currency hedged. They are different instruments.
An ADR is priced in dollars during US hours, so it is not a substitute for the home listing if you need the local session or the local currency. It is a good substitute if you need US-hours exposure to the company.
Why the equity coverage is US only
The equity coverage is US only because Massive takes the US consolidated tape feeds directly, and each additional country is a separate exchange relationship, a separate license and a separate data format rather than more of the same. Forex and crypto are global for the opposite reason: neither has a national exchange to license, so the same feeds cover the world. Indices are global because an index is a calculation rather than a venue, so a US provider can publish a European or emerging-markets benchmark without any of us touching a foreign exchange.
That is why locale says us on an index that tracks Germany. The field describes who publishes it, not what it measures.
Non-US equities are on the product roadmap. Roadmaps move, so treat the roadmap as the current answer rather than this article.
If you see an error
An unknown ticker such as a London or Tokyo local symbol returns an empty results array with "status": "OK", not an error. Search by company name instead and look for an ADR.
{"status":"NOT_AUTHORIZED"} on a forex or crypto pair means your plan does not include Currencies. It does not mean the pair is unavailable.
