Migrate from Alpha Vantage
This guide is for developers who call the Alpha Vantage query API and want to run the same app on Massive. It maps each common function to the Massive endpoint that replaces it, and lists the differences that change your results. To compare the two products before you switch, see Massive vs Alpha Vantage.
Before you start
- Sign up and copy your API key from the dashboard.
- Pick a plan for each market you use on the pricing page.
- Read the REST quickstart for the response shape that every endpoint shares.
Using AI?
Paste this into Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or any coding agent that can read files and fetch a URL:
To let the agent check real responses while it works, connect the Massive MCP server. Massive also publishes skills and plugins for coding agents.
The request
Alpha Vantage has one URL, and the function parameter picks the data. Massive has one path per data type, and the key goes in a header.
Alpha Vantage returns the latest 100 days by default. outputsize=full returns all history, and needs a premium key. You filter the dates in code:
Massive takes the date range in the path. Both dates are inclusive:
- Long ranges. Alpha Vantage intraday history comes one month per call. Massive returns a next_url when there is more data. The Python client follows it for you.
- Rate limits. Paid Massive plans have no per-minute limit, so you can remove throttling and retry loops.
The response
Alpha Vantage returns an object keyed by date, with every value as a string:
Massive returns a list of bars, with numbers:
| Alpha Vantage | Massive | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Date key, such as "2025-10-01" | t | Unix milliseconds at the bar start. Daily bars start at midnight ET |
| "1. open" | o | |
| "2. high" | h | |
| "3. low" | l | |
| "4. close" | c | |
| "5. volume" | v | |
| None | vw | Volume-weighted average price |
| None | n | Number of trades |
Remove any float() or parseFloat calls on the values. To get the date back, convert t from Unix milliseconds to US/Eastern.
Symbols
Stock tickers stay the same. Forex, crypto, and options become one ticker with a prefix.
| Alpha Vantage | Massive |
|---|---|
| symbol=AAPL | AAPL |
| from_symbol=EUR&to_symbol=USD | C:EURUSD |
| symbol=BTC&market=USD | X:BTCUSD |
| IBM270115C00390000 | O:IBM270115C00390000 |
| INDEX_DATA with symbol=SPX | I:SPX |
| TSCO.LON | Not covered. Massive stocks are US listings only |
Prices
The two APIs adjust prices differently, so check this before you compare numbers.
- TIME_SERIES_DAILY returns prices as traded. Set adjusted=false on Massive to match.
- TIME_SERIES_DAILY_ADJUSTED adjusts for splits and dividends. Massive adjusts for splits only. To rebuild dividend-adjusted prices, use the historical adjustment factor from Dividends.
- TIME_SERIES_INTRADAY adjusts for splits and dividends. Massive adjusts for splits only, so intraday prices near a dividend will not match.
- Both include pre-market and after-hours trades in minute bars.
Errors
Alpha Vantage returns HTTP 200 for most errors, with the message in an Information key. Massive returns an HTTP 4xx status. Check the status code, not the body.

Massive currently doesn't have an equivalent for Alpha Vantage commodity prices, non-US listings, or indicators other than SMA, EMA, RSI, and MACD. New data and features ship often, so check the product roadmap for what's planned.
Streaming
Alpha Vantage has no streaming API, so apps poll GLOBAL_QUOTE or intraday series. On Massive, replace the polling loop with a WebSocket subscription. Connect to wss://socket.massive.com/stocks, authenticate, and subscribe to trades, quotes, or minute bars. See the WebSocket quickstart.
Bulk history
Alpha Vantage has no bulk download. If you loop over symbols with outputsize=full to build a local history, use flat files instead. Each file holds one day of daily bars, minute bars, or trades for every US stock.
SDKs
Alpha Vantage has no official client library. Its docs give code samples and link to community wrappers. Massive has official clients for Python, JavaScript, Go, and Kotlin/JVM. The Python client follows next_url for you.
